Correction - Temporary overnight warming centre, Nunns Creek Park - For the record

On Dec. 7, 2021, City Council conditionally approved the use of Nunns Creek Park parking lot for a temporary overnight warming centre to address a current shortfall of extreme weather shelter beds in Campbell River. The facility would likely be a large, heated tent and would include food service and cots to keep those sleeping unsheltered safe and warm overnight in winter months. For more information, see this Council Report dated November 30, 2021.

To clarify, it was the Campbell River & District Coalition to End Homelessness (the Coalition) that made the request to Council to use Nunns Creek Park, not the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is a member of the Coalition, along with several other organizations in the city. Furthermore, the Coalition is leading this initiative and seeking financial support for the warming centre from BC Housing and other community donors. The Salvation Army has not received donations for this initiative.

The overnight warming centre at Nunns Creek Park is a temporary measure and the Coalition continues to search for a suitable indoor location for an emergency weather shelter for the 2021/2022 winter season.
