    BEECH STREET RENEWAL PROJECT POSTPONED

Previously scheduled upgrades to Beech Street in Campbell River’s downtown core will not proceed in summer 2023, while the City of Campbell River (the City) considers possible next steps for the area.

“The Beech Street Renewal Project was proposed for this time because of an opportunity to line up work with other construction in the area. However, due to factors beyond the City’s control, that chance to streamline is no longer available,” said Drew Hadfield, Director of Operations. “Upgrades to the City’s downtown core remain part of our long-term utilities planning, and we’ll move forward with them when a new opportunity at efficiently delivering these upgrades arises.”

Plans for the roadway improvements on Beech Street, between Alder Street and 10th Avenue, were proposed to include improved crosswalks, sidewalks, lighting, and upgrades to underground infrastructure. They are part of the Refresh Downtown Strategy which allows upgrades to move forward when opportunities for alignment with other work arise.

The Beech Street Renewal Project had been planned to move forward in parallel with a private development at 325 Beech Street beginning this summer. With the private development no longer proceeding, there isn’t a current opportunity to align with other improvements in the area. The utilities upgrades in the area remain on the City’s list of long-term goals as part of the Refresh Downtown Strategy, but there is no timeline proposed at this stage.

Parking at the 325 Beech Street property will remain unchanged at this time.
