Fire Ban Coming Into Effect for Campbell River

Campfires, backyard fires and beach fires are not permitted from noon on July 17, 2025.

Effective noon on Thursday, July 17, 2025, a fire ban will be in place for Campbell River. The ban applies to all recreational fires, including campfires, backyard fires and beach fires anywhere within the city’s fire protection area. All open burning and using items such as fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and torches (including propane torches for the purpose of burning weeds) are prohibited.

“With wildfire risk climbing due to ongoing hot and dry conditions, we’re taking proactive steps to reduce the chance of human-caused fires,” says Fire Chief Kelly Bellefleur. “This fire ban is an important measure to help protect our community. We’re asking everyone to take fire safety seriously and respect the ban. By working together, we can help safeguard our homes, natural areas, and the first responders who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.”

The ban follows the BC Wildfire Service’s announcement to prohibit campfires for the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes all of Vancouver Island and the south coast of BC. The use of CSA-rated or ULC-rated campfire apparatus and cooking stoves that use liquid or gaseous fuel is allowed at this time, however, in extreme fire conditions, these may also be prohibited.

People found in contravention of the fire ban may be subject to fines and legal action in accordance with bylaws and provincial regulations. Residents can report recreational fires using the City of Campbell River Fire Department’s non-emergency line at 250-286-6266. In case of an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
