Community Safety Update
Regional Grant Partnership Opportunity to Support Emergency Preparedness
Council approved participation in a joint funding application with the Strathcona Regional District under the 2026 Community Emergency Preparedness Fund Emergency Support Services grant program through the Union of BC Municipalities. If successful, the funding would support an emergency exercise to help staff and volunteers prepare for and coordinate emergency support services for people displaced by a disaster. Council also endorsed the Strathcona Regional District submitting the application on the City's behalf.
Fire Inspection and Investigation Designations Approved
Council designated the City's Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chiefs, Fire Prevention Officer, Captains and Acting Captains to conduct fire inspections and enforce the BC Fire Code. Council also designated the Fire Chief and up to seven trained and qualified personnel as Fire Investigators. These appointments support the City's efforts to help prevent fires and protect people, property and buildings from fire-related risks.

2026 Union of BC Municipalities Convention Update
Council received a report on the 2026 UBCM Convention, attended by the Mayor, Council and City Manager in September. The annual convention brings together local governments from across British Columbia to discuss shared priorities and challenges. This year's theme, Common Ground, focused on housing, community growth, financial pressures and community safety.
During the convention, City representatives and Chief Chickite of the We Wai Kai Nation met with Premier Eby, four Cabinet Ministers and provincial staff to discuss issues important to Campbell River and the region.
A City-submitted resolution calling for coordinated provincial and federal action to improve regulatory certainty and support resource-based communities was endorsed by UBCM during the convention.
Council authorized the Mayor to send follow-up letters to the Premier, participating Ministers and the Japanese Consulate to thank them for their time and reinforce the City's key advocacy priorities.
