2026 Local Government Election

Welcome to the City of Campbell River’s, Local Government Election page. 

The next municipal election will be on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.  

Citizens of Campbell River will vote on the following: 

  • One (1) candidate for the position of Mayor 
  • Six (6) candidates for the position of Councillor

  • General Voting Day: October 17, 2026 

Voting Opportunities

Qualified electors may vote at the polling location of their choice but may not vote more than once.

Assisted Voting

A voter who requires assistance may:

  • Bring a translator  
  • Request curbside voting if unable to enter the voting place  
  • Ask the Presiding Election Official for assistance
  • Bring a person to assist with marking the ballot

Anyone assisting a voter must complete a solemn declaration at the time of voting.

Voter Information

Are you Eligible to Vote? 

Voters in local government elections in BC are either Resident Electors or Non-Resident Property Electors. 

Resident Elector Eligibility 

You are qualified to register as a Resident Elector in the City of Campbell River if you meet the following criteria: 

  1. 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day;
  2. Canadian citizen; 
  3. Resident of British Columbia for at least six months prior to the day of registration; 
  4. Resident of the City of Campbell River;
  5. Not be disqualified by an enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law. 

Non-Resident Property Elector Eligibility 

If you own property in Campbell River but live elsewhere, you might be eligible to vote in the City of Campbell River general election as a Non-Resident Property Elector, if you meet the following criteria: 

  1. 18 years of age or older on or before general voting day; 
  1. Canadian citizen; 
  1. Resident of BC for at least six months immediately before the day of registration; 
  1. Registered owner of real property in the City of Campbell River for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; 
  1. Not eligible to register as a resident elector in the City of Campbell River; 
  1. Must only register in relation to one piece of property; and 
  1. Not be disqualified by any enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law;
  2. Only one property owner may vote if there is more than one property owner. That person must have the written consent of the majority of the other owners. A Non-Resident Property Elector Consent Form will be required – signed by the majority. This form will be available here soon.

Important: Under the Local Government Act, ownership does not include property registered in trust, or in a company’s name. 

All Non-Resident Property Electors must provide the following documents prior to voting: 

  • Completed Registration Form. This form will be available here soon.
  • Proof of property ownership, such as certificate of title, property tax notice, or BC assessment notice. 
  • Two pieces of acceptable identification, at least one piece must include a signature. 
  • Non‑Resident Property Elector Consent Form, if required.

Non-resident Property Electors are encouraged to register and provide the required documentation in advance of voting day at:

Are you Registered to Vote? 

On-line voter registration needs to be complete before August 25, 2026, in order to appear automatically on the Voters List for the upcoming Local Election. Check the Elections BC - Register to Vote webpage to confirm you are registered or to update your registration.

You will also be able to register at the time of voting. When you attend you will be required to complete a registration form and show two pieces of acceptable identification (at least one with a signature). 

Acceptable Voter Identification includes:

  • BC Drivers Licence; 
  • BC Identification Card; 
  • BC Care Card or BC Gold Care Card;  
  • BC Services Card (with or without a photo); 
  • Vehicle insurance papers; 
  • Social Insurance Number Card; 
  • Citizenship Card; 
  • Property tax notice; 
  • Credit card or debit card; or  
  • Utility bill. 

In addition, non-resident property owners must also provide proof of ownership. 

Voters List 

Beginning September 1, 2026, until the close of general voting for the Election, a copy of the list of registered electors will, upon signature, be available for public inspection at Campbell River City Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays).  

Contact City Hall to request that your information be omitted or obscured from the list of electors, or to object to the registration of an elector. Objections must be made by 4 p.m. on September 11, 2026.

Candidate Information

Qualifications to Run for Local Government Office 

To qualify as a candidate for local government office, at the time of nomination, a person must meet the following criteria: 

  • 18 years of age or older on October 17, 2026; 
  • Canadian Citizen; 
  • Resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; and 
  • Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office. 

Nomination Process 

The nomination period begins at 9 a.m. on September 1, 2026 and ends on September 11, 2026 at 4 p.m. Nomination packages will be available starting August 14 2026 at City Hall front reception or by download here once available.

All Nominations by mail or in person will not be accepted before September 1, 2026 at 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2026.  

Advertising and Signage 

Political Campaign Signs are only permitted from September 1, 2026, at 9 a.m. and shall be removed no later than seven (7) days following the date of election (October 17, 2026) as outlined in the City's Sign Bylaw No. 3309.  

Election signs are not permitted on: 

  • City or Provincial Parks or Crown Lands,  
  • public waterfront, or  
  • on road right-of-way medians.  

Political Campaign Signs may have up to four (4) faces. The Sign Area of any one face shall not exceed 2.97 meters (32 square feet). The Sign shall not exceed 2.13 meters (7 feet) in Height.

Election Financing 

Elections BC administers campaign financing, disclosure and election advertising rules under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act. Elections BC does not administer voting or candidate nominations for local elections. For more information, see Who Does What in Local Elections

Previous Election Results

In BC, municipal elections are held every four years, on the third Saturday in October. The last election took place in 2022. The next municipal election will be in October 2026.
