Taxes and Assessments

The City of Campbell River uses property assessment information, along with the tax rates approved by Council, to calculate your annual property taxes.

Assessments 

Each year, BC Assessment (a provincial Crown corporation) produces independent and uniform property assessments on an annual basis for all property owners in the province. The City uses information from BC Assessment as the basis for calculating annual property taxes.

Tax Rates

By May 15 of each year, Council approves the annual tax rates bylaw on which property taxes are based. The rates are expressed as an amount per thousand dollars of assessed property value. For example, if the rate is 7.5000, property taxes would be $7.50 for each $1,000 of assessed value, and a home valued at $100,000 would pay $750 in property taxes for that year.

Annual Tax Notice

Tax notices are usually sent the last week of May each year, shortly after Council approves the tax rates bylaw. The tax notice shows the amount of property taxes due, and may include parcel taxes and user fees applicable to your property. 

The City also serves as the collector for other taxing bodies, such as:

  • Provincial School Taxes 
  • Strathcona Regional District
  • Comox-Strathcona Regional Hospital District
  • BC Assessment
  • Municipal Finance Authority

Tax notices are mailed to each property or emailed to those signed up for eBilling

If you do not receive your tax notice by the second Friday in June 2025, please contact the City's Tax Department at 250-286-5715 or email taxes@campbellriver.ca.

Payment Options

There are a number of ways to pay your property taxes in the City of Campbell River. Options include: 

  • Cheque, money order or debit card, in person at City Hall. 
  • Credit card, online or in office, subject to a two per cent fee.
  • Through your financial institution, in person or through online banking (please allow banks two to three business days to process payments).
  • Cheque or money order by mail or courier to City Hall:

    Mail must be received by 4:30 p.m. on the due date to avoid a 10 per cent penalty. Mail lost or delayed by the post office will receive a penalty.  

A 10% penalty will be applied on all outstanding current tax balances and on any payments received after the due date. Penalties are also applied to any balance owing due to an unclaimed Home Owner Grant. 

If you have sold the property, please return your notice to City Hall.

Pre-Authorized Withdrawals

Pre-Authorized Withdrawals (PAWS) are a way to make monthly payments towards the upcoming year's property taxes. Payments are made automatically from your bank account on the 10th day of each month. This starts in August and ends in May. 

You may enrol in PAWS at any time. The monthly payments are prorated to reflect your start date.

An annual tax notice will be mailed to you at the end of May each year and show your current year’s taxes less the total prepayments and interest earned. The balance owing will be withdrawn from your account on the tax due date in July of each year.

To enrol in the program: 

The withdrawals will commence on the 10th of the following month after the application is received. The agreement carries on each year until you provide notice to cancel it.

Penalty

Tax Sale 

Each September, the City is required under the Local Government Act to hold an annual tax sale for those properties with delinquent taxes (unpaid taxes for three years).
