Work to expand parking near the Seawalk and Big Rock Boat Ramp at 1021 Island Highway South has temporarily paused after an archaeological artifact (lithic) was identified during demolition.

In accordance with the Heritage Conservation Act, a qualified archaeologist is assessing the site. The City is working with the Province and engaging with local First Nations to determine next steps. The area has been secured, and the material is being treated as a protected heritage resource during this process.

Archaeological materials can hold important cultural and historical value. The City is committed to ensuring they are handled with care and respect.

Timelines will be updated once more information is available from the archaeological review. We appreciate residents’ patience. Updates will be shared on the City’s website as they become available.
