Current Fire Restrictions

There are currently no fire restrictions or bans in place for the city of Campbell River.

When no restrictions are in place, you may have recreational and beach fires as long as those fires meet bylaw regulations as follows:

  • Recreational fires are meant for cooking or providing heat and must be:
    • in a permanent outdoor fireplace, barbeque or fire pit not larger than 60 centimetres (24 inches) in diameter that is designed and constructed to confine the fire, or
    • within a fully enclosed burner or similar device.

Here are some tips for preparing and caring for your next beach or backyard fire:

  • Do not light a fire or keep it burning in windy conditions, as the wind may carry embers and spread the fire.
  • Since fires are not allowed on park land or private property (other than your own), always light beach fires below the high tide line.
  • Maintain a fireguard around the fire by removing all flammable materials (grass, kindling, driftwood, etc.).
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Be extra vigilant in supervising children near the fire and teach them how to Stop, Drop and Roll if their clothing should catch fire.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby for extinguishing the fire.
  • Make sure that the fire is completely extinguished, and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area. An abandoned fire can become a dangerous and fast-moving blaze.

For additional guidelines and safety advice for these fires, see Outdoor Fire Safety.

Always check local and Provincial restrictions before lighting any fire. For Provincial fire bans and restrictions, information on campfires, and open burning in BC, visit the Government of British Columbia website: Fire bans and restrictions.
