It’s a sure sign of spring and that hotter, drier weather is in the forecast: Stage One watering restrictions will take effect on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Why are Stage One restrictions coming into effect now?

During late spring and summer, there is a jump in demand for residential water. Watering restrictions routinely come into effect from May 1 to September 30 each year to allow for more consistent water use. This helps to maintain the water volume and pressure that’s needed for firefighting and other essential services during this period of high demand. Conserving water also helps to protect the water supply and the environment.

Residents are asked to follow the restrictions and be aware of water use. Conserving water now may help reduce or delay the need for Stage Two or Three restrictions later.

When is watering allowed during Stage One restrictions?

Watering residential lawns and gardens by irrigation is permitted as follows:

  • Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, from 5 to 9 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.
  • Odd-numbered addresses on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 5 to 9 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.

Watering non-residential lawns and gardens, and common areas controlled by a central system or strata (not by individual units or residents) by irrigation is permitted as follows:

  • Even-numbered addresses may water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 1 to 8 a.m.
  • Odd-numbered addresses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 1 to 8 a.m.

Watering gardens, trees and shrubs by hand is permitted at any time.

Conserving water is important at any time of the year.

Use water wisely! Tips for outdoor water conservation and lawn care:

  • Mow lawns to a length of three inches or more to reduce moisture loss and sunburn.
  • Set sprinklers to water for 20 minutes or less per lawn-watering session.
  • Water no more than two times per week to encourage deep root systems.
  • Provide good aeration and drainage to create a healthy lawn.
