About this Project

The City of Campbell River is working with the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) to support the addition of a third arena at Strathcona Gardens through the REC-REATE Phase Two project. As the new ice sheet will be constructed within the existing parking area, the City is making land available at Pinecrest Park to accommodate additional parking and improved access to the facility. Together, these improvements will help strengthen recreation opportunities for residents for years to come.

Parking at Pinecrest Park
To support the arena expansion, the City is making lands at Pinecrest Park available for approximately 370 additional parking spaces. Combined with parking provided by the SRD, this will create approximately 500 parking spaces serving Strathcona Gardens. The project includes:
- Accessible parking and priority parking areas
- An approximately 220-metre covered, paved and well-lit pedestrian connection linking the parking area to Strathcona Gardens through the existing trail network adjacent to the RCMP building.
New Artificial Turf Field at Robron Park
The City has proposed replacing the existing grass soccer field at Pinecrest Park with a second artificial turf field at Robron Park on School District 72 lands. The proposed field would expand opportunities for soccer and other field sports while supporting year-round recreation. This is the logical next step to creating a soccer hub at Robron Park, with access to the fieldhouse and other amenities. Student use would be prioritized on weekdays, with community use on evenings and weekends.
A proposal has been submitted to the School District - which would see the full cost of construction to be borne by the City with the hope that detailed design could commence immediately, with construction to begin in early 2027. The School Board has deferred consideration of the proposal until 2027.
Off-Leash Dog Park Relocation
Building on the success of the temporary Robron off-leash dog park, the project also includes the permanent relocation and replacement of the existing off-leash dog park within the Robron area, which has become a well-loved public amenity.
Project Benefits
These improvements would enhance recreation amenities in Campbell River, improve access to Strathcona Gardens, and help reinforce the Robron area as a recreation hub for the community.
Location and Timing
Current Phase
- Detailed design work is underway for the third arena in Strathcona Gardens and parking in Pinecrest park.
- The City has proposed and committed funding for a new artificial turf field at Robron Park to replace the existing Pinecrest Park soccer field. The proposal is currently under consideration by School District 72, with the Board having deferred a decision until 2027. If approved, design and construction timelines will be determined following that decision.
Future Updates
Updates will be posted to this page as project planning progresses and timelines are confirmed. Information related to the proposed artificial turf field will be shared as discussions with School District 72 continue.
