The City of Campbell River strategically acquired the property at 1021 Island Highway South to support the planned expansion of the Big Rock Boat Ramp, with the goal of improving parking capacity and traffic flow in the area. Phase One of the project includes the demolition of existing structures, removal of hardscape elements, and grading of the site to align with adjacent properties.
Location and Timing
This project is located at 1021 Island Highway South and work began in spring 2026. An archaeological artifacts (lithics) were identified during demolition in May 2026. Timelines will be updated once more information is available through the archaeological review.

Project Progress
Demolition work at 1021 Island Highway South has been paused after archaeological artifacts (lithics) were identified during the removal of the building's foundation.
In accordance with the Heritage Conservation Act, a qualified archaeologist is assessing the site, in coordination with the Province and local First Nations, to determine next steps. The area has been secured, and the material is being treated as a protected heritage resource during this process.
Project timelines will be updated once more information is available through the archaeological review.
The City of Campbell River will soon begin demolition of the structure located at 1021 Island Highway, adjacent to the Big Rock Boat Ramp parking lot. This work will support the planned expansion of the Big Rock Boat Ramp parking lot. Demolition is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 19 and is expected to be complete by Friday, June 5, 2026. During this time, the parking lot at 1047 Island Highway will be closed. Portions of the Big Rock Boat Ramp parking lot will be closed for short durations to accommodate the work.
