The City of Campbell River created the Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw [PDF/140KB] to promote the revitalization of the downtown area by incentivizing construction in the area. This bylaw provides a tax break for new construction or redevelopment of existing buildings in the downtown core.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the tax exemption, your project must meet the following criteria:
- Be within the Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption Area or the Special Improvement Area (see Schedule A and B of the Bylaw [PDF/140KB])
- Be a renovation or new construction project
- Be a multi-family or commercial project
If your project meets those criteria, it is eligible for some portion of tax exemption from the municipal portion of taxes.
Multi-Family Residential, Commercial, or Mixed-Use Multi Family / Commercial Projects
Projects are eligible for:
- 100% exemption from municipal taxes for new construction, or
- 100% exemption from municipal taxes of increased value from renovated buildings
Exemption applies for a period of five years.
LEED Gold or Platinum Projects
LEED Gold or Platinum Projects are eligible for:
- 100% exemption from municipal taxes of increased value from either renovation or new construction, for a period of 7 years.
Application Process
You should submit your application for the tax exemption when you are applying for your building permit. Along with a completed application form, you will need to attach:
- true copies of the architectural plans for the proposed building/redevelopment work
- a true copy of the building permit application submission for the proposed building/redevelopment work
- a $150 application fee
Once your application is complete, you can drop it and your application fee off at City Hall.
