Myra Falls Mine

The Myra Falls Operations is an underground mine located within Strathcona Provincial Park at the south end of Buttle Lake, 90km southwest of the Campbell River. The mine began production in 1966.

Quinsam Coal Mine

The Quinsam coal mine is located on Vancouver Island approximately 18 km southwest of Campbell River. It first opened in 1988 and went into care and maintenance in January 2016.

MYRA FALLS MINE LTD. SUSPENDS ACTIVE MINING AND MILLING OPERATIONS

On December 18, 2023, Myra Falls Mine Ltd. filed for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and suspended active mining and milling operations at the Myra Falls mine. The Myra Falls mine and milling operation has been placed on indefinite care and maintenance.

Steps the City is Taking to Support the Community
The City has partnered with Community Transition Services, led by the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, to work collaboratively with First Nations, the Employer, the Union and Community Partners to support impacted workers and their families and attempt to ease negative effects for the community. Community Transition Services revolve around three support pillars:
1. Worker Transition: to address the needs of the impacted workers and contractors.
2. Economic Development: to connect communities and their residents to available resources to help manage the stress and uncertainty associated with economic disruption.
3. Community and Local Government: to assist the community in implementing economic development and diversification plans, building on existing work, assets, and partnerships.
Council remains focused and committed to its ongoing work on economic vitality.
Additional Supports
The City is working with all levels of government and support agencies to help everyone impacted.
- The Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation is leading Community Transition Services, which support communities such as Campbell River experiencing significant economic impacts, due to the closure or reduced operations of a major employer.
- North Island Employment Foundations Society, the WorkBC Centre for the region, has started to see impacted workers access their services. Qualified and knowledgeable staff, with experience offering services following significant shutdowns in other communities, are available to help individuals through the process of being laid off and what to do next.
