January 1, 2022, the new fee schedule for electric vehicle charging stations will take effect. Under the Miscellaneous Fees and Charges Bylaw Amendment No. 3838 electric vehicle drivers will be able to access 30 minutes of free electricity to top up their vehicles from municipal EV charge stations, and after 30 minutes they will pay $2 an hour.
Electric vehicle owners can re-charge their cars in Campbell River at eight charging stations. The first six were officially opened in time for International Earth Day, April 22, 2013.
The charging stations are located at:
- Campbell River Visitor Information Centre in Tyee Plaza (1101 - 1299 Shoppers Row)
- City Hall (301 St. Ann's Road)
- Dogwood Operations Centre (385 South Dogwood Street)
- North Island College (1685 South Dogwood Street)
- Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre Gas Bar (1416 Island Highway)
- Campbell River Hyundai (1853 Meredith Road)
- Campbell River Toyota (2785 North Island Highway)
- Steve Marshall Ford (2300 North Island Highway)
- Campbell River Community Centre (401 - 11th Avenue): This is a fast charger station. Not all electric vehicles may be compatible with this charging station.
The EV charging stations in Campbell River are part of a province-wide network of 570 stations installed as part of the Provincial Community Charging Infrastructure Fund (CCI). The CCI was established in 2012 to support the growing demand for electric vehicle charging infrastructure and compliment similar initiatives underway in Washington, Oregon, and California. The City of Campbell River received $24,000 from the CCI Fund toward its six stations and matching funding from the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Rebate Program from the Province of B.C. This enabled the City to complete the project entirely through external grant funding.
“Being part of the electric vehicle charging station network ensures that Campbell River has the infrastructure to support electric vehicles for local owners and for visitors,” says Councillor Ryan Mennie. “Electric vehicles greatly reduce vehicle-related greenhouse gas emissions, which is one of the goals of the City’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan.”
