The project will see upgrades extended along a 1km stretch of Highway 19A, from Big Rock Boat Ramp to Simms Creek Lift Station (300m south of Rockland Road) – both improving services and the beautification of our city’s waterfront. The work includes significant improvements both above- and under- ground, including the reconstruction of sewer and watermains, installation of storm drains, a widened roadway, curb and gutter, sidewalk, seawalk, streetlights, enhanced park spaces, and installation of underground electrical utilities.
This project is supported by the Government of Canada and Province of BC’s New Building Canada - Small Communities Fund, which awarded $6.43 million for the upgrades work. Read the news release about that announcement here: https://bit.ly/2ZgTusA
Construction on this phase will be split into two parts, with Phase 3A beginning in 2019, and Phase 3B in 2020. Part of the highway upgrades in 2020 will require a closure of a portion of the highway and the installation of a roundabout at Rockland Road. Watch for details to come.
Getting Around During Construction
Work has started on Hwy 19A between 1st Ave and Rockland Road. While two lanes of traffic will often be maintained, there will be periods of single-lane alternating traffic or even temporary stops in both directions as services are connected from one side of the road to the other.
Remember: alternative routes are your best option for the coming months. Please reroute where possible
