UPDATE: Walkway repairs will start at the ramp on March 6 and continue to March 20. Corrective work is a result of winter storms that caused damage to the walkway/ viewpoint in December last year. Work hours will be between 7am - 5pm (during weekdays only). The ramp will remain open during the work - though the southern parking lot area will be closed during the work.
About the Big Rock Boat Ramp Upgrades
The first phase of upgrades for the Big Rock Boat Ramp is now complete. In early October, 2018, the ramp reopened after four months of construction, with improvements that will make it safer and more accessible for users.
- Floating Dock System: These docks will allow year-round access and moorage for boats as they launch/return to the ramp.
- Wider Ramp: The ramp has been widened and paved with a high-traction finish
- Raised Breakwaters: Taller breakwaters will protect from wave action and gravel/sand build up in the basin. A reoriented entrance will also provide a more protected access to the ramp.
- More Parking: The southside lot has been graded and a new entrance added which increases parking by about 50 percent. This is an interim measure intended to increase capacity while long-term plans for the parking lot area are developed.
Phase 2 - All of the work above the top of bank including enhancements to the parking lot arrangements and vehicle movements, inclusion of park amenities including benches, picnic tables and water access, public amenities including washrooms and potential for fish cleaning station - will be reviewed/considered by Council in 2019. No further work on this phase is planned at this time.
