The Big Rock Boat Ramp is ready for an upgrade, which will make this valued community asset more accessible for more people. Plans for improvements are founded on public consultation and comments and questions from user groups. The goal is to create a facility that will be useful for decades to come.
Work must be scheduled according to times permitted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and as a result, the Big Rock Boat Ramp will be closed from June-October 2018.
The Big Rock Boat Ramp improvement project will include two phases of work.
- Phase 1 – UNDERWAY NOW: Includes all in-water work, including improvements to the breakwater and installation of a floating ramp system. These upgrades will result in a vastly improved in-water area, with better traction and water access for boats and trailers during low tides. Breakwater improvements will reduce waves and decrease future boat ramp maintenance requirements.
- To accommodate this work, the Big Rock Boat Ramp is now closed to October 2018.
Phase 2 – is all the work above the top of bank including enhancements to the parking lot arrangements and vehicle movements, inclusion of park amenities including benches, picnic tables and water access, public amenities including washrooms and potential for fish cleaning station. At present the project scope includes the development of a conceptual plan that will be presented to Council in the fall of 2018 for their consideration. No further work on this phase is planned at this time.

Getting Around During Construction
There will be no major disruptions to highway traffic or surrounding areas during the first phase of the Big Rock boat ramp upgrades in the spring/summer of 2018. The majority of the work will take place in the water, and all nearby homes and businesses will be accessible as usual. All traffic updates will be shared here.
