Traffic calming can help with common neighbourhood traffic concerns such as speeding, inappropriate traffic volume and pedestrian and cyclist safety.

Traffic Calming

Neighbourhood traffic concerns such as short-cutting, speeding and pedestrian and cyclist safety are commonly cited as issues in residential neighbourhoods.

Traffic is going too fast in my neighbourhood.  How do I request traffic calming?

If you are concerned about speeds and high volumes in your neighbourhood and would like to see traffic calming measures installed, you should contact the City of Campbell River’s Roads Department. Please be as specific as you can and include as many details as possible, including:

  • What time of day is the problem the worst?
  • What days of the week is the problem the worst?
  • Is the problem worse in one direction?
  • What is the specific location?
  • Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

How does the City of Campbell River decide where to install traffic calming?

The City receives many requests for traffic calming, and prioritizes the requests based on a number of factors. Some factors considered include:

  • Number of drivers speeding
  • Average daily traffic volumes
  • Number of collisions
  • Is the area in a school zone?
  • Are parks or playgrounds nearby attracting pedestrians?

The City will proceed with the top priority neighbourhood requests based on available budget.

What types of traffic calming are available?

The range of traffic calming measures can include:

  • Speed humps
  • Traffic circles
  • Curb bulges
  • Raised crosswalks
  • Right-in / right-out islands

The actual measures selected are based on neighbourhood consultation and consultation with other road users, including the Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, the RCMP, Watson and Ash (local BC Transit operator) and Emterra (garbage contractor).  The City endeavors to please as many groups as possible.

Once traffic calming is installed, what happens next?

Once the City installs traffic calming, we review and monitor speeds and volumes and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the traffic calming measures are meeting the objectives.

I still have questions.  Who can I contact?
