The City plans and maintains approximately 85 km of bike routes. Some of these routes are separated bike paths (along South Dogwood); some are bike lanes (Highway 19A from Erickson to Rockland); and some bike routes are regular roads shared with vehicle traffic.
Five Basic Principles of Cycling
-
Maintain your bicycle in good working order: be sure brakes, headset (steering) and general bike maintenance is maintained.
- Be as visible as possible to others: ride with lights in winter, dark or in poor conditions and wear bright reflective clothing at all times. Avoid stopping on corners or in poor visibility areas on hills. If you do stop, pull as far off the road as possible.
- Learn the skills needed to control your bike: brake evenly and steadily, stay in a straight line, manage speeds on downhill and be aware of bumps and obstacles on the road.
- Cycle in traffic safely and predictably: shoulder check and stay straight on the far right side of the road.
- Know and obey the rules of the road: use hand signals and understand the road rules for both cyclists and motorists.

Bike to Work Week
Since 2008, the City has been part of organizing a Bike to Work Week, in late May / early June. Participation has increased each year, and in 2011, there were 428 cyclists, including 117 new cyclists and 111 teams. A total of 15,400 km were cycled during the week! Bike to Work Week hosts a number of breakfast celebration stations, a BBQ and other events to entice people to commute by bike. Biking to work supports a cleaner environment, a healthier population and reduced green-house gas emissions. Click here to see the 2011 Bike to Work Week Yearbook.
