The City of Campbell River is one of 179 BC local governments that have committed to the BC Climate Action Charter. The Charter requires local governments to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, report on community climate initiatives, and become carbon neutral in municipal operations by 2012.

Climate Action

To become carbon neutral in municipal operations requires the City to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible through energy retrofits to buildings, efficiency upgrades to utilities, fleet upgrades, and other initiatives. Remaining emissions must be offset through investment in projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Campbell River has a Corporate Carbon Neutral Plan that guides our actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City has also adopted the following targets for reducing our emissions:

2012

10% reduction below 2008 levels

2020

35% reduction below 2008 levels

2050

85% reduction below 2008 levels

Campbell River’s 2011 Climate Action Report

Under the Climate Action Charter, the City of Campbell River is required to publicly report on municipal climate action initiatives.

This report is submitted to the Province for the City’s Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) funding, which provides a gas tax rebate. Under the City’s Carbon Neutral Strategy, this grant money goes toward climate action projects. In 2012, the City of Campbell River expects to receive a $21,500 rebate. Take a look at the City’s 2011 report to learn more about our climate action initiatives.
