Working under the Operations Division, the Sustainability Department works closely with all City Departments to coordinate the City's carbon neutral and Green City initiatives.

Sustainability Department

While all City departments are tasked with reducing their carbon footprint, the Operations Division through the Sustainability Department is responsible for the overall development and management of the City’s sustainability and carbon neutral efforts. In 2007 the City of Campbell River signed on to the BC Climate Action Charter, committing to become carbon neutral with respect to our operations by 2012. To address this challenge, Council’s 2008 Green City Strategy aims for a comprehensive long-term strategy for the reduction of Green House Gas Emissions (GHG’s) in Campbell River.

Using 2005 as a baseline, the City has calculated its carbon footprint at approximately 1500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, primarily from building and fleet emissions.

Specific projects that are in the planning stages or are underway include hybrid or electric vehicles for the City fleet, alternative energy for City facilities, energy efficient building retrofits such as the Green Roof at City Hall, and the completion of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.
